Rumanian
pianist Eugen Cicero who gained international recognition as
a jazz artist in the 60s and playing in Berlin in the 70s died
last Friday - aged 57 in Zurich/Switzerland. For the last 10
years he has been living in the Swiss capitol where he prepared
a comeback alongside with his son Roger who found him dead in
his flat on Friday. Cicero was forced to leave the country in
his early years after his own quintet escaped from the Rumanian
system and went to the U.S. Cicero started a career on its own
in Munich with Charly Antolini and become famous for swinging
versions of classical compositions in a kind of Jacques-Louissier-Play-Bach-style.
In Berlin he became "Mist Golden Hands" playing both
the "Rias Tanzorchester" conducted by Horst Jankowski
and later the "SFB Radio Bigband" directed by Paul
Kuhn - at that time among the best jazz bands in Germany. With
his "Eugen Cicero Trio" he toured Japan.
